Yes, I use the mouse. You can slow down the speed of your movements in the configuration settings under the “inaction” tab. There is a control for mouse sensitivity. Also, you can slow down the fly-thru or walk-thru speed in the same place. Honesty though, the best thing is a SUPER FAST video card.
Are you navigating only with the mouse, or do you have a space navigator (or similar)? Your walkthroughs are pretty smooth. Mine are always jerky with the mouse.

For 2D; I have several friends who use and strongly recommend Dynascape. As for 3d in landscape design; you might check out Pool Studio, even if you don’t design pools. I know there are many other software programs out there. If you find another good one, let me know.
