We are in the middle of re-doing our front yard landscaping. We would like to add a nice tree in the middle of our yard. We are looking for one that survives the california heat, but doen’t make a real huge mess. I have seen the Magnolia trees and love them, but not sure if they work well in Cali. Any suggestions on trees?

I’m realizing that I’m not very good at designing our flower garden and I thought maybe I could get some help online. I’m working with annual flowers right now. I did a search and found a couple of sites, but I’m looking for something simple – maybe with pictures and simple information. Any helpful sites would be appreciated. Thanks.

I’d like to get my son interested in growing vegetables but I’m not sure how to go about it. Should I give him his own plot in the garden? Use containers? Grow other things like sunflowers?
We were recently forced to roof over the open air atrium in the center of our house, due to constant wood rotting and poorly designed drainage. Now we are wishing we had put in a skylight instead because the flower garden we had out there no longer has ANY access to sunlight. Does anyone happen to know of some good plants/flowers that we could do in an entirely artificailly lit setting?
I know there’s a lot of DSLR cameras out there (canon, nikon, sony, leica, olympus, etc.).
I also know that DSLR camera can capture more emotion, more color than compact camera. But what are the fundamental difference between all of those?
(e.g. canon DSLR is good for landscape? portrait? low light?)
My father was a wonderful gardener & he used coffee grounds in his garden as part of his fertilizer; he had a beautiful garden. In my own rose garden I used coffee grounds & my roses were really lush. Now it’s not working in the potted roses I have “inherited” with my rental house.
The roses were left unwatered in direct sunlight in the California sun until the blooms were dead. They haven’t come back. Should I prune everything back now?
President Obama, talking to the AMA, has suggested that kids in American schools could work in their schools’ victory gardens, to offset cafeteria budgets – and emulate his wife and the children who maintain the White House victory garden.
