Designer Casey Boyter found a new love to combine her interest in garden design and architecture: green roofs. After a cross-country tour to explore every green roof she could find, she returned to Austin, Texas to bring green roofs to everyone. On a 250 square foot roof on a new bunkhouse at her home, she designed an intensive green roof that supports waterwise cascading roses, perennials that attract wildlife, clumping grasses, and even a tiny lawn. One way is to stop using Oil and Gas mowers. Use human powered mowers, or Electric which can be supplied by Alternative means (Wind, Solar, Hydro, etc…). Tractor mowers with a Diesil engine need to be run more on Vegetable Oil (Bio-Diesil). Switch to fuels that can be produced with Alternative energy, from the natural source. Build the alternative systems into the mainstream by mass marketing, and they will consume.

What do you get when you mix a throng of eager gardeners driving roads they may not know in search of a little backyard eye candy? Why, the Rensselaer County Garden Tour of course, to be held on June 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. Extension has been sponsoring this event for 12 years, and in that time I am pleased to report that we’ve never had a broken bone, a fender bender, or even as much as a bug bite.

City crews finished the re-landscaping of the Clayton Fountain last week with a splash of green sod across the front. The new design is drought-tolerant and low maintenance and reduces the previous lawn area by 65 percent.
