Green Thoughts: Backstage at the garden tour
What do you get when you mix a throng of eager gardeners driving roads they may not know in search of a little backyard eye candy? Why, the Rensselaer County Garden Tour of course, to be held on June 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. Extension has been sponsoring this event for 12 years, and in that time I am pleased to report that we’ve never had a broken bone, a fender bender, or even as much as a bug bite.

I ditch the tour group to personally witness garden design with rare plant selections at its best with unusual plants such as Schefflera taiwaniana, a golden leaf Leycesteria formosana (Himalayan Honeysuckle), the cold hardy banana Musa basjoo, a Mahonia ‘Lionel Fortescue’ and others. A rare evergreen Magnolia from Vietnam is also mentioned.
